Brouwerij Martens NV "Willianbräu Premium"

Notes via stream of consciousness: These plastic bottles are great for traveling around in Europe but in general they house less than average beers, and Brouwerij Martens has proven that to me on many occasions so far but let's see... it's poured a clear golden body beneath a short head of white foam. It's not skunked, which is nice, but it simply smells of adjunct-laden malt and generic hops, as if hop extract was used. Let me check the label... well I'm at least half wrong, and maybe more so, it lists hops and unmalted cereals. It just doesn't smell like a grainy malt to me, but more sweetish and watered down sugary malts, and there are no real hops to speak of. "Generic beer aroma" would be a stretch, and I also smell some esters from a less than slow and steady, cold fermentation - I've been brewing professionally for almost 30 years so I know of what I speak. In that sense it reminds me a bit of some American malt liquors, and yet this is only 4.7% Alcohol by volume, but let's go on... the flavor follows exactly. It's got the same sweetish, seemingly adjunct-laden malt, the same hint of floral and grassy hops, and the same slightly fruity but probably more oddly estery yeasty flavors. There's even a subtle metallic note to it. It's not horrific by any means but it's far from inspiring, let alone "very good". Looking back, the head dropped quickly and very little lacing was left behind, and that continued throughout the glass. It's not the worst appearance I've seen but it's certainly not a very good one. A moderate bitterness balances it, and I'm not sure if that's a flaw or a blessing as it stands - it finishes sweetish but that helps to cover up some of the yeasty esters, but on the other hand it might become a touch cloying after a glass or so. Medium bodied and gently crisp-then-smooth in the mouth. All in all with everything said and done, it's just not that well brewed. It's an inexpensive price-point beer and it tastes like it. Avoid.
