Maternus Gold
.5L clear plastic bottle, dated "16.05.14 319" (consumed 01.01.14)
€,29 @ ALDI, Teltower Damm 281, Berlin, Germany

Appearance: Clear. Golden. Bright white head. Average head retention and lacing.

Smell: Skunked, of course, in a clear plastic bottle. Beyond that it's got a generic "beer" aroma with some floral hops.

Taste: Lightly sweet doughy malt. Mainly floral, but also herbal. Mildly bitter. Basic. Very accessible. Easy to drink.

Mouthfeel: Standard medium-light body / median carbonation.

Overall: Made for the masses Belgian Pilsner. Most likely a price-point beer. No defects beyond skunkiness. Basic and refreshing with a light touch of character via the floral hop component.

A: Pours light golden with lots of both small and large bubbles in the liquid. The soapy white head sinks quickly into very poor lacings.

S: Faint smell, sweet grainy. Some bitter hops and some citric notes.

T: Very mild taste; sweet grain and kind of rough bitter hops.

M: Actually the aftertaste is not bad; rather long and pleasant bitter. Body is thin and carbonation quite offensive.

O: I can't find any reason for buying this beer ever again.

Brewed by Martens for Aldi Nord. Pale colour, clear, bit of foam on the top. Strong industrial lager smell, also some hops. Bitter sweet taste, earthy and grassy. Not particulary smooth but ok. Lots of gas. You can't expect much for 30 cents a bottle but there are worse beers around selling for a lot more
