Presentation: The only I sampled during a visit to the De Kuppe in Brugge [see BeerFly] on Good Friday 25th April, 2005.
Oddly enough it arrived already poured into a large goblet glass without the bottle which was left at the Bar. So I wasnt able to gleam as much information as I usually do from new beers which I try. But it was listed on the Kuppe Beer Menu as being from De Proefbrouwerij and a Belgium Abbey Dubbel which is 6% in strength.
Appearance: The Kuppe was dark but held to the nearby incandescent light the body exhibited a warm brown, mildly turbid appearance with some hints of a red sunset mixed in there for god measure. Topped with a whipped cream like large lovely looking, and lasting, beige colored head that stayed around. Carbonation seemed lively but not interfering.
Nose: Fruity whiffs teased in an otherwise rather staid malty Dubbel-esque nose. Yeasty in the third segment, it got a little stronger as I worked my way down the glass and it warmed. Some spices in the finish when more fruity hints are revealed.
Taste: Lots of malts, caramel and soft chewy Devon toffee. No hint of the alcohol at all in this one. Hints of baked bread and a mild minty fresh breath feel in and after the swallow. Yeast is there in the last half and the finish is dry, malty and a little herbal. Seems to finish quickly on the palate.
Mouthfeel: Earthy feel, soil laden body with woody hints. Supports the 6% Dubbel rather well, but feels like it lacks something in the finish when the whole experience quickly comes to an end.
Drinkability: Enjoyable, but by no means a great Dubbel in the grand scheme of things. Accompanied some light nibbles easily but it really lacked a finish that invited you into the next mouthful.
Overall: The weak finish and thinning body towards the end is the weak link here. Otherwise this is a nice effort, but Im not sure I would go for this one if I saw it again.
