Oostende 19/7 2023. 33 cl bottle from Spar, Langestraat, Oostende. Blue label with a cartoonish drawing of an white bearded monk holds glass with a dark brew sporting a halo.
Pours opaque dark brown with a big light beige head. Stable. Settles as 0,3 cm thick layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Crawling up the sides of the glass. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is fairly intense with a pronounced odor of dark chocolate mingling with sugar and alcohol. Dry dark chocolate, toffee and caramel. Brown sugar. Sweet liqueur.
Light carbonation. Slightly thick, oily, soft, lightly tingling texture.
Flavor is intense with a strong sweetness followed by a fairly strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with a subtle bitter undertone. Lingers for a while. Finish is dry chocolate.
It looks like something from the bargain bin but it is a fine dark Belgian with a nice touch of chocolate.

L- Incredibly dark ruby/chestnut. Pours clear with a 5mm ultra-fine bubble dark tan head. (holds well, and forms lacing down sides of glass).
S- Quite light mollasses is the most prominent for me.
T- Pungent, deep roasted notes, mollasses, but quite a bit too much sugary sweetness for my liking.
F- It's around this point I start wondering 'How much of a good thing is too much?'
O- I materially preferred their 8% Tripel to this one. This one to me is wayyy OTT. I'd concluded what I wished to after 100ml (1/3rd bottle) so on a +ve note maybe this is a really good one to share with a couple of friends, 100'ish ml each, views might be divided though!
Bought from BeersOfEurope (UK). 330ml bottle. BB: 15/02/22.
