A Belgian Imperial Stout, very curious! This beer pours a very dark brown, almost black bright beer with a quick settling head that is off-white.
The smell is fruity and has some liquorice notes, together with figs and some very light roasted notes. The smell is not like any other RIS I ever had. The term Belgian applies really to the Belgian yeast character, which probably does not combine very nice with some harsh roast.
The taste is moderate sweet with a liquorice taste. The dark malts are present, but do not get harsh or overly roasted anywhere. They add a lingering liquorice, figs and chocolate taste. The bitterness is moderate and more in line with a Belgian Quad. The 9,5% alcohol is well hidden. I am not sure if the style Imperial Stout applies here, though.
