Ruby brown color where light passes easily through the center of the glass. Light beige, lumpy head which lasts for about ten minutes before settling to a thin layer of foam. Good lacing in the form of wider streaks and ample spots.
Brown-sugar sweetened toast comes to mind on thenose. There's a light "refrigerator" smell behind that.
The taste brings some hop-infused bitterness that is a bit elevated from most of the English Brown Ales I've had. Still the base malt is the predominant flavor--much, much dryer than the smell suggests. Fuller body, but not quite to a Bock. Good carbonation. The finish is semisweet chocolate and black pepper. Lengthy aftertaste.
