On-draught @ the brewery. $13 AUD per 330ml (a bit of an odd serving size by Australian standards).
12% ABV.
Heavy caramel malt, maybe crystal malt, toasty amber malt, treacle-y sweetness, malt syrup. Too sweet, in short, with malts one-upping the hops to poor effect.
Warm and boozy with a bit of hop burn too, all of which make it a bit of a task to drink.
Hopwise it's entirely less intricate than one would expect a 12% IIPA to be. A bit floral, vaguely fruity, obvious sticky hop resin, bittering hops that lose the battle against the furious onslaught of saccharine malt sugars.
12% makes it loud but not good. Hop flavours are poorly articulated. No hop varietal is well showcased here. A loud beer for loudness' sake, and in that sense I find its brewing approach disappointingly American.
I can tell there's a competent captain at the wheel here, but why he or she is steering the ship in this direction is confounding.

I don't get why it has to be 12.2%? What does the huge ABV add to the experience? I don't get more complexity, I don't get more depth of flavour, it doesn't even blow me away with an alcoholic taste. I will commend Richard for masking the ABV during consumption, amazing how it doesn't come through. The hop flavours are only slightly amped (if at all) from the other 'American' IPAs on offer. After ALOT of warming I get more noticeable smacks of resiny bitterness, but it just doesn't scream Triple IPA to me. I didn't want to mention balance, seeing as the style doesn't aim for it, but there is a very heavy malt presence that honestly feels like it's fighting the hops more than trying to even the scales. Could do with a bit more carbonation and hop flavour, rather than outright bitterness.
