From the can, it pours a dark brown with a nice light brown head that slowly diminishes. Lacing. The nose gets some roasted scents, followed by the mouth getting some chocolate, dark rye and it does have some bitterness. Mild slightly bitter aftertaste.

Pours a dark brown with tan head. Some roasted coffee notes on the nose. It's dry and nimble - dark chocolate and a spiced bread note. If you’re looking for chocolate syrup, don’t look at this. It’s quite lean and drinkable.

Poured from a 16 oz can into a standard pint glass.
Perfectly opaque brown with a small head of small bubbles that leave a fine lacing.
Full, roasty flavor with very good balance of chocolate, rye, and bitterness.
Dangerously drinkable!

Pours very dark brown, almost black. Tan colored head that fades. Roasty aroma mixed with milk chocolate band a bit of vanilla. Similar flavor, slightly sweet. Medium bodied, smooth feel.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown / black color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was an inch of creamy, off white, long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.
S: A nicely subtle aroma of malt, chocolate, hops, rye, and lactose.
T: Tasted of a moderate amount of the advertised rye, a good shot of dark chocolate (always welcome), a tinge of coffee, some lactose, some malt, and a bit of light hops in the finish. An interesting flavor that's incredibly well-balanced. It's a bit lighter in character than your typical imperial stout, but it's still quite flavorful.
F: A well-carbonated beer with a dry, smooth finish. Medium-bodied.
O: This is a well-crafted, easy to drink beer. Definitely drinkable.

Pretty dang black, no head, just a ring of foam around the edge. Slippery lacing.
Smells like dark chocolate with a hint of licorice.
Whoa! Dark chocolate, espresso, licorice, pumpernickel, black pepper, and smoke all trying to dominate, but it works.
Full bodied with low carbonation, as it should be.
Really damn good.

Bottle:
Pours nice and dark, with at least two fingers of light tan head. This head does provide some sheets of lace interrupted by clarity early on the glass. Thick collar lasts the whole glass.
Nose is muted when cold, but I get an earthen root note along with some very lightly charred malt. There's also a bit of wintergreen forest that is dormant in the cold of winter. Eventually I start to notice a little bit of rye bread - maybe in replacement of my initial description of "earthen root" notes. More warmth brings a more normal strength nose with some chocolate notes.
Taste starts with a lightly spiced roasted malt flavor. I'd forgotten this was a rye ale, and that little spice reminded me. There's a coffee astringency to the flavor as it rolls over the tongue. I sense a hint of citrus rind bitterness nearing the end. Warmth smooths the fairly dry beer and brings a little bit of a bitter chocolate aspect to the flavor.
I'd say give this one time to warm, as the dry bitter coffee feel cleans up a bit and becomes a little smoother with some bitter chocolate. The rye does play a bit more up front, and its influence lasts into a warmer beer as well. Nicely done.

I like the flat look of burnt oil... The smell was of sweet and very inviting... The tast as described later is not bad but different every time... There was an ever so slight Booz burn on the first sip... Overall I do recommend this beer to accompany meals... Just like Rye bread, the flavor is completely different from pairing to pairing... I don't recommend drinking this beer for fun... It belongs with a meal... Smoked meats go very well with dark rye...

5oz at brewery.
Dark shot through with ruby, even the middle, small tan head.
Chocolate, red pepper, herbal hops, lactose.
Hershey’s syrup, herbal hops, Rollos, and there’s a little rye. Like their description, there isn’t much roast, but unlike it, the rye isn’t prominent.
Silky smooth beer with near nitro-like bubbles.
Yummy stout that doesn’t taste at all like over nine percent.
