Big head, almost pitch black in color with nice thick tan head. Aromas of raisins and sweet roasty malts. Taste is dark malts, roasted coffee, bitter chocolate and old leather with a nice balanced hop bitterness. Great balance and a not so bad alcohol burn. Finish is roasted and bourbon.

Pours an extreme dark brown with complete opacity. 2 finger khaki head is dense. Good retention and lacing.
Aroma is strong bourbon to start. A bit of spicy rye. Oak, vanilla, and roasty chocolate. Black licorice.
Spicy rye malt and black pepper on first sip. Bourbon next, not as strong as the nose. Black licorice and bitter chocolate. Good barrel notes - oak, vanilla, and caramel.
Semi-thick mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Fairly creamy to go with spice from the rye. Lingering whiskey undertones.
Nice BA beer. Mix of the bourbon barrel and the rye malt gives an interesting sweet and spicy mix. Flavors blend well.

On tap at brewery (listed as BBA Dark Rye):
Pours dark brown with fleeting dark tan head. Thin rim of bubbles does froth lightly with a decent swirl. No lacing.
Nose is medium strength and on point, dark fruit bread highlighted by raisin from the combination of beer and barrel. Bourbon perhaps a tad light, but the soaked whiskey wood is I there.
A little bit thin, this beer reminds me a little of AleWerks Bourbon Barrel Porter more than a stout (per my definition). Lightly burnt sweet sugar up front could be the barrel char. The rye jumps in early, adding that bite and ruffling the feel a tad. Cold, this seemed way too thin, with warmth it fills out a little, but still medium bodied at best. Little chocolate and fig mid taste as the sweetness lingers a little into the end on a warmer beer. Rye lasts the longest, but a light coating of dessert raisin/dare bread buoys it.
This beer grew on me, but I still think it's feel and rye throw it more into porter range than stout. Decent brew once I let it come to temperature.
