Working my way through another beer from the "tasters pack" the in-laws got me for Xmas. A taster pack that's full of faux-craft beers brewed under license by un-named breweries for Pinnacle Drinks. The liquor arm of the supermarket giant Woolworths in Australia. Both Woolworths and Coles have so many private labels and brands it's hard to keep up in this theater of Australia's Supermarket War.

So I come to review my first "sour". Now it's at this time I should advise I'm not really a sours guy. I don't like passionfruit all that much, so I have really no idea how this is going to go. But I've just put my two babies to bed, and I need a beer. So let's crack it open and see if this Supermarket Sour Succeeds or Sucks.

Appearance: Poured into my trusty Ikea tumbler it has a fizzy soft drink like head that's disappearing fast. Like a lot of these private branded beers, the head lasts as long as it takes to read the blurb. It's hazy, bright yellow, like the can. It looks thirst quenching on a hot day. (3.25/5)

Aroma:, Definitely getting an artificial Passionfruit Sweetness, similar to that if you opened up a bottle of Passiona or Passito (Passionfruit flavoured soft drink - soda, here in Australia). The can says there's real Passionfruit pulp added, but I certainly take that with a grain of salt. Definitely a whiff of sourness, fresh lemon (although it's probably a hit of citric acid...). Theres a slight sweetness, and it smells like those candy sour straps you used to buy at the canteen in high school. (3.0/5)

Taste: Probably the most un-sour beer I've ever tasted. Tastes a bit like Diet Cordial with mineral water. It's very watery. There's more of a lemon citrus flavour than passionfruit. I think they might have messed up the canning and put lemon juice and soda water in the can. It's not sour that sour, it's not that sweet, it's more bitter. Remember how your grandfather used to love lemon barley water. This reminds me of that. It is somewhat refreshing however. (2.5/5)

Feel: it's light, it's watery, it's refreshing. It's not overly carbonated. But it's like a lemon barley cordial mixed with soda water. I'm already getting flashbacks of my childhood with Pop. (2.75)

Overall: As I mentioned at the start, I'm not that into sours. Like Kombucha, to me they're a fad. I know there are your traditional sours, but like there are traditional Kombucha drinks out there, sours have taken off and been introduced to the beer market with all the glitz, glamour, and fake hysterity that Justin Bieber brought to pop music. And like Justin Bieber, modern sours for me aren't all that great.

This is OK. It's not great, but not something I'm going to go out and buy.
