Another beer, another offering from pinnacle drinks and their ever expanding brand labels, muscling in on the craft beer scene, arguably to trick your average punter into drinking craft beer, but the money goes into the pocket of Woolworths, and not a independent brewery plying the trade as an actual craft. *sigh*. Well, here goes. This pale ale is running under the name of New Dawn brewing, has a creamy off-white and blue 375ml can. This one if marketed as “low carb” (ooooh, healthy) trying to appeal to your Pure Blonde & Hahn Super Dry drinkers whose tastebuds have been ground away to nothing. Let’s see if this is as bland as those two macro swill offerings are….
Appearance: Poured into my Arundel Brewery pint it pours a yellowing golden colour - think dehydrated piss, always a good start…- with a thin white bubbly head that (if you’ve read my other reviews on beers by Pinnacle drinks) disappears faster than Melissa Caddick after she got raided (I’m listening to the Melissa Caddick podcast currently. If you’re from Australia you’ve probably heard of her…). Honestly it looks barely like an ale, looks like a passable lager, and honestly that’s what I’m expecting out of this. It’s clear, filtered, maybe a slight haze to the beer but looks boring. (2/5)
Smell: Grassy grain notes, orange peel, some light sweet mango, white bread crust. Somewhat fruity, sweet smelling. Faint residue of alcohol, but this could pass on the nose alone as a orange crush/tropical cordial smell. Wasn’t expecting much, but it’s not entirely horrible. It’s not bursting with aroma, but enough to let the rusted on Macro lager drinkers know that it’s not a macro lager. (2.25/5)
Taste: It’s got a few things going on at once that I’m not sure should be present all in one go. Starts off with a syrupy sweetness (see my comments about fruit cordial) and then fades away into this dry bitterness that finishes with a metallic twang. I suspect the low-carb aspect has fucked with this a bit. The more sips I take the worse it gets. (2/5)
Feel: it’s thin, watery, dry bitter-ish finish, and a metallic twang that coats your palate, and wraps around your teeth. I’m looking forward to brushing my teeth after this. (1.75/5)
Overall: Look, I wasn’t expecting miracles, and you’re certainly not going to find any drinking this. This is probably one of the worst numbers Pinnacle Drinks have offered amongst their underwhelming portfolio of faux-craft beers. It’s hardly passable as a ‘Pale Ale’. Had they called this a XXXX Gold Summer flavoured lager, this would have been more relatable. If you’re stuck on a desert island with no access to fresh water, it’s a suitable replacement for drinking your own piss, but aside from that i would stay away from this one and hope it fades into obscurity. (1.75/5)
