Other Australian supermarket faux-craft beer that nobody asked for by Pinnacle Drinks. Crony is an Australian slang term for 'friend', or 'close companion'. Anyway, let's see how Refreshing this Pale Ale actually is.
Vessel: 375ml Can with a cream and blue label. This was discounted to $4.20 from $6 at BWS Glenquarie in late December. Drunk a couple of weeks later on 27 Jan 2024. Discounted, as the best before is 20/01/2024. So it's a few days out of date. Shouldn't matter too much.
Appearance: Pale Golden, almost lagerish in appearance. Frothy bubbly head, that's disappearing very quickly in my Coopers ale Tulip. Not 100% filtered, but a solid chill haze adding to a slightly cloudy effect. Tons of Carbonation going on. Doesn't look awful.
Aroma: Sweet pale malt, with a grassy, floral and grainy smell. I would say there's Pride of Ringwood hops used predominately in this beer. It's borderline lagerish in its nose, and in a blind smell I would have picked it for a lager. Not really what I come to expect with a pale ale. There's some very light stone fruit, mango and passionfruit in there, but it's not the predominate smell.
Taste: Light citrus and subtle stone fruit flavours, with a strong malt backbone. Actually it's surprisingly nicer than I was expecting given the owner of this beer. There's a gentle bitterness at the back end of the sip. Flavours aren't overpowering, and rather gentle.
Feel: Thin, highly carbonated, decent for a hot day.
Overall: Probably being a little over generous with my score here, but with all beers produced by Pinnacle drinks, I go in with the lowest of expectations. This isn't going to blow you away, and there of course much, much, much better pale ales out there, but I would give this an OK if you're being introduced to the pale ale scene as a rusted on macro lager drinker. It drinks a little like a lager, but there's just enough going on to remind you it's not a lager. What I would call an entry-level Pale Ale.
