2009 Vintage 5991/6000
ABV 10.2%
paid $60 for it at Jim's Cellars in Crows Nest
Wax top, poured into a Mikkeller tulip
A-- Poured a dark brownish orange color, one finger light brown head that quickly went to film. Decent enough head retention on swirling. Pretty much stayed at a light brown film through drinking and a half finger of lace with this.
S-- Orange, Pineapple, Strawberry jam, plumb, Carmel and toffee. Better nose after swirling but is a bit soft. Just a slight bit of alcohol in the nose.
T-- Hops have dropped off. Strawberry, plumb, orange, Carmel, raisin bread. Sweet and sticky in the front but it drops off fast. Not a huge taste, a little thin in spots but not bad at all.
M-- Slightly sweet and sticky in the mouth. A little thin in spots but it is pretty decent. Low carbonation and medium feel. Well hidden alcohol.
O-- This is a barleywine, maybe an Old Ale. Not a Euro Pale Lager. It is a bit thin in spots but this quite workable. For the money far better than the Holgate beer at the same price. Will it last for 10 years? Probably not as think this is at peak right now. Totally mislabelled by Fosters but I can understand that as I doubt Fosters would be able to sell 6k bottles with barleywine on the label. Worth the tick and the case alone.

After a good weekend and having a few mates around id thought id finally crack this $70 crowny and i am reviewing the 2009 edition which is 10.2% and this is bottle no 1699 of 6000,it pours a dark orange/amber hue with decent carbonation that leaves behind a creamy two finger head and some sticky lacing, the smell is nice mix of boiled candy, pineapple, resinous hops and alcohol,it has a very sticky mouthfeel to it which slides down quite nicely with a tinge of alcohol heat and exudes tastes of boiled candy, pineapple, raisins and finishes with a light passionfruit tinge, overall its definately an overhyped beer that is totally overpriced but im glad ive tried it and would like to see what the next edition is going to be like but just couldnt see myself drinking this on a regular basis at its price even if i had the dollars to.

Firstly, I have called this Euro Strong Lager.... although it's more like a Barley Wine.
But.... there's been much discussion about this, and thankfully due to a windfall, felt it was time to have a go.
Bottle # 2576 of 5000. 750mL.
Comes in a very fancy box, with a ribbon, gold leaf, a fact sheet, a neck pamphlet, and, worst of all, wax seal... Guys.... forget all of this stuff, and save yourselves (and us) the money... Just stick it on a back label and ditch the rest of the self-indulgent onanism.
It all looks very, very fancy.... for Crown Lager ??
Now for the wax seal.... it took me FIVE MINUTES to cut it off. i.e. 5 minutes between a man and his beer. If it hadn't been for the fact I spent $52 on this, I would have given up and cracked a Coopers.... Again, self-indulgent onanism....
However, the tone of this review now improves...
Pours a healthy, heavy tan head, (as recommended in a wine glass).... good inch & a half. Hazy amber-cum-burnt orange.... looks good. Interestingly, the head on the last pour from the bottle had an offwhite head....
Initial aroma of yeast.... very much my fermenter post-brew. Sulfur hints (probably the only commonality with Crown Lager). Estery, caramel & spice. Pecan pie, sticky date pudding, licorice & sherbet. Warms into some toast, stonefruit, allspice.
Flavours of yeast and alcohol initially. Hop spiciness (I guess from the Galaxy) comes through. Licorice. Good malt support, but not too sweet. Lingering bitterness, finishing with a faint nuttiness & toffee.
It feels creamy.... coats the mouth with a syrupy residue. Last time I had this effect was with a Bigfoot Barley Wine. Slight heat from the alcohol. Lips and tip-of-the-tongue tingle and go slightly numb.
I think it will age, although comparable ales of this intent generally have more malt supporting. The Galaxy has a harsh edge that could be filed down, and the ethanol could soften.
As I progressed through the bottle, I realised I was sipping it and enjoying it more like a wine than a beer. It's good occasionally to observe how you enjoy a beer when you're not 100% focused on it.
This beer is good. Top quality in fact. I spent my $52 thinking I was getting a Crown-Carlsberg Elephant hybrid. No chance. I would like to have the $$ to buy several, and see what the cellar does to it.
Having read reviews that align this beer with Belgian Ale, I'm more inclined to propose Barley Wine. Is there any reason why Barley Wine can't be a lager ?

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
