a brown ipa with coffee. i dont think we see nearly enough of this sort of thing, the dry cocoa malt elements next to a big sturdy hop base, coffee aside, those two pieces together are awesome, especially here where the chocolate malt is flavorful but really dry, roasty and woodsy and sturdy without being rich, and the hops are fresh and piney and bitter without being oily or heavy, so this stays light to drink despite the color, and offers a much more complex interplay between hops and grain than most ipa of the pale variety ever affords us. the coffee addition here is awesome too, maybe on its way toward being a little stale but thats on me not the brewers. its not much more roasty than the grain is, keeping this lighter to drink, but has cool earthy and nutty features, as well as a little welcomed thinning acidity. its refreshing when its really cold, especially for how flavorful it is, but it opens up really well when it warms up too. faint smoke and baking chocolate, bran flakes, and christmas trees. a really neat beer thats oddly light in body and drinks easier than it probably should. coffee and hops have not gotten enough time together in my opinion...
