Appearance: The beer pours a cloudy straw colored body with a two finger head. Retention is good.
Smell: The bottle lists the ingredients as malt, wheat, hops, coriander, and orange peels. The bottle is not lying. All of those smells are evident, coriander and orange being the most dominant. There is also a floral clove aroma as the beer warms.
Taste: It does not quite have the "Belgian twang" found in many of the Belgian strong ales but it is still quite tasty. Coriander and orange are the two dominant flavors. There is a hint of hops and a slightly sour taste on the finish.
Mouth feel: It is light bodied with mild carbonation. I was expecting a drier finish complimented by some carbonation. Unfortunately, this was not the case. This is probably the weakest area of the beer. While not bad, it does not seem to fit the style.
Overall: This is one of the best, if not thee best, brews I have had from Japan. This was the champion Belgian White at the 2011 Brewing Industry International Award held in the U.K. I do not know what kind of competition it had but it does not surprise me it won an award. It is a good Belgian white ale from an unlikely place.
