A lovely day up in the mountains that let me try a huge sample of some new NC locals. Always thrilled when a day works out like this one did.
The only real Scottish ale I found all weekend, thrilled it finally showed up I made a beeline for it. Deep reddish brown pour with a nice cap of off white to light tan that really gave it that big, chewy look you would expect from the style. Aroma of grasses, lots of woody and caramel notes coming up through the air. Really just thick smelling. Even as it warms that deep, rich caramel aroma filled everything around you, this was exactly what I needed. Followed through nicely on the flavor as it was candy sweetness and rich bready malts that stole the show, not as thick as I would have liked it but I really think it still served its purpose quite well. Warming really brought out the full onslaught of the flavor and really brought that flavor to the front. Hints of lavender and various herbal meadow like notes are in the finish with a light hop bitterness rounding it out.
Overall really nicely done and one of my favorites of the weekend. I would have no problem at all with having this one again any day.
