Lol, someone was telling me people are selling these on eBay for serious coin because Trump’s lawyers want the brewery to stop making these beers, IDK if it’s true, and it seems far-fetched, but damn is that clever marketing [until you get sued of course]. Well this is my first beer from Behemoth Brewing out of Napier in Aotearoa – you might know it as New Zealand, but it’ll always be Aotearoa to me. I even like saying “Aotearoa”, “Ao-tea-roa”... all Maori words sound cool, it’s like a real-life Klingon dialect [apologies if I’ve offended any Klingon speakers – your language is real too]. Off-tangent now, a bit of confusion because the can says “Chur Brewing Company” on it (“chur” being Kiwi for “cheers”) however the brewery is Behemoth – identity crisis much? Probably a ruse to distract Trump’s lawyers.
Poured from a 330ml can into a nonic pint.
A: Clear golden body with a big 1 inch off-white head that ever-so-slowly dissolves leaving some tasty lattice-work lace inside the glass. 8/10 material that is. 8/10.
S: Yet another Kiwi IPA that smells fantastic “up there with the best” but it probably wont deliver in the flavour because I’m sceptical of all NZ IPAs now, and a cynic. Still: this aroma is f-ing fantastic! Piney/floral/citrus-y all at the exact same time. Very Tuatara Double Trouble with that BIG hop-driven aroma, only this is 1.8% ABV lighter (7.2% versus 9%) – what manner of chicanery is this Behemoth!?! 9/10.
T: Surprisingly Dump The Trump delivers in spades [double poker pun there if you can spot it]. Flavour is a collection of earthy/floral/piney/citrus hops, ala Ye-Olde West-Coast style, with a nice and broad caramel/biscuit malt base leading towards a medium piney hop bitterness. One of the better American IPAs I’ve encountered in a while in fact. Colour me “very impressed” Behemoth [which I envisage as a gold-purple hue]. 9/10.
M: Medium bodied, reasonably chewy and hop oily, with a thin(ish)/dense carbonation that seals the deal. “You mean you work with seals!?”. 8/10.
D: Wow, I was totally a Republican before I drank this beer (despite being Australian and not affiliated with any US political party) but now I am totally a Democrat chanting “DUMP THE TRUMP” “DUMP THE TRUMP”, thanks Chur/Behemoth! Seriously this is a top-notch example of a great NZ IPA that has an aroma/flavour balance not often seen from NZ brewers (normally they absolutely nail the aroma but lack in flavour). There’s only one thing left to say: chur bra! 9/10.
Food match: DUMP THE TRUMP, DUMP THE… oh yeah, pulled pork for sure!
