With their two highly acclaimed beers under their belt, Caramelized Chocolate Churro Baltic Porter and Bourbon Barrel Aged Chocolate Barleywine, the Moody Tongue team take the best of both worlds and create a massive, barrel aged, roasty, savory beer.
Bourbon Barrel Aged Baltic Porter comes espresso black and rounded with a dainty creme swirl. As aromas of campfire, french press coffee, burnt caramel and burnt cream fill the nose with bold aromatics, the taste soon slathers the tongue with a host of seared sweetness, dark chocolate, walnut, coffee and cream.
And as the sweetness drifts and the roasty, toasty, carbonized flavors take an even more robust turn. Charred grain and bourbon spice take firm control as the tannic balance from oak and roast intertwine for a tangy, tawny, vinous laden counter to the more savory and sweet malts that linger in finish.
Sherry, oak, vanilla, caramel and coconut offer layers of complexity than only bourbon barrels can provide while the full bodied beer resonates on the finish a boisterous as imperial stout. A wine-like astringency signals an over-oaked character as the beer trends malty dry, spicy and simmering with peppery bourbon deep in finish and with roasted cocoa echoes in aftertaste.
