It's dark alright, more black than a lot of Stouts. Handsome rings of creamy beige foam in the tall Maredsous goblet. Smooth and creamy in the mouth. Aroma is not much, but there's a whiff of charred grain.
It's not so black in flavor and the roasted malt taste is smooth and mellow. There is a modest dose of hops but not much bitterness. It's like the best Brown Ale you ever had-- malty with a dark descent.
This is a good example of the American Black style-- it's not trying to be an IPA but it's more robust than the usual Schwartzbiew. A nice surprise. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Hellam's Vineyard in La Conner.

Pint from "Growl Movement" in Salem OR Black body with dark mahogany highlights around the edge..small tan head..but leaves luscious lace. Nice coffee, chocolate powder and floral hop aromas. Taste is very nice with the semi-dark chocolate mixing remarkably well with the hopping..lots of coffee too. Great but more on the porter side than IPA. Lovely smooth a medium body. Very good Cascadian Dark..describes the beer better thab Black IPA. Impressed..my first from this newish brewery look forward to more.
