neat to have a couple new ones from these guys and see some innovation, this is a somewhat lighter than customary baltic porter, pretty well lagered, and i suppose a beer that makes sense for warmer weather, at least as the style goes, neat take on it anyway. its not black, more reddish in the daylight, a half inch of tan head sits on top, less roasted barley driven than a lot of these, but still fitting of the style i reckon. there is some chocolate and wet soil character to the nose, almost brown ale to me on the grain side, not a ton of darker character but subtle natural process coffee, raisin, and cigar keep it layered enough to be interesting to me, and the lager yeast is evident. a tad sweet in the nose, and there is a little molasses type sweetness in the flavor too, light maple, baking chocolate, and dark bread also present in the flavor. i like the way the lager yeast brings all the grains together, i like the mineral composition, and i like it drying out a bit later on. its not as strong nor as robust as a lot of these, maybe feels slightly thin for a baltic porter, but i think its solid anyway. its long and its nuanced, the yeast is central, and its cool to see an esoteric style like this from wild ride!
