A 330ml bottle with a BB of Sept 2018. Acquired a while back from a webshop. The label calls it a red IPA; part of their Discovery series which in this case means a single-variety IPA hopped with Simcoe.
A: Poured into an IPA glass. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy reddish-marmalade colour with fine suspended sediment and plentiful carbonation. Produces a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before slowly reducing to a patchy surface layer. Some lacing.
S: Aroma of sweet caramel malt with hints of barley sugar, toffee, sherry, dried fruit, oxidation, ale yeast and faint leafy hops. Weird - not very IPA-like. Can't tell if it's supposed to evolve into this or whether it has faded or gone off.
T: Tastes of sweet grainy malt with notes of caramel, toffee, barley sugar, mild dried fruit, sherry, subtle oxidation, ale yeast, faint hay and a touch of leafiness. Rather sweet, followed by a modest bitterness upon swallowing. Oddly unbalanced.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with spritzy carbonation and good body. Mildly astringent. Aftertaste of caramel malt, grain, barley sugar, oxidation, ale yeast and a vague bitter leafiness in the background.
O: Hmmmm - not great for an IPA. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are dominated by caramel malt, grain, ale yeast and subtle leafiness. Little hop aroma or presence. Decent body. Hard to tell what the problem is - perhaps the hops have faded or something has caused the bottle to deteriorate. At any rate, not a brilliant brew. Caveat emptor.
