32oz growler poured into a River's Edge dimpled mug.
The beer pours a slightly hazy golden copper color, hues of amber and orange with a nice soapy, frothy two fingers of white head that has nice retention and leaves big swatches of sticky lace behind. The aroma is heavy on the malt, reminiscent of caramel, vienna or amber, bitter piney hops, light grapefruit peel and a dirty grassiness, simple, pleasant, though a bit heavy for my palate, distinctively midwest. The flavors echo the nose, more hop bitterness, piney, earthy and resinous, mild citrus, with assertive malt character, smooth and sticky, not too sweet but again, not a bitter hop bomb. The mouthfeel is nice, medium to full body, coating, smooth, carbonation is really gentle but lively, super smooth finish with just a touch of dryness.
Verdict: A nice pale ale from River's Edge, as stated, distinctly midwestern, balanced between the malt and hops without picking sides. It's got a nice refreshing quality to it and is quite easy to drink, a solid offering for a meal time pairing or a lazy day session.
