Like a Kolsch, this beer is fermented at 60F, lending to its clean, slightly bitter, and lager-like character. Unlike a Kolsch, caramel, chocolate and black malts are blended to create a light brown colored beer w/ a touches of toast, biscuit, and caramel in the flavor. There are two types of altbiers, a Northern German alt and a Dusseldorf alt. Ours is a Northern German Alt with a fair amount of hop bittering from German Spalt hops. Northern German altbier usually has a little less bitterness and a little more malt sweetness than many Dusseldorf altbiers, which results in a more balanced beer.

Pours a medium dark brown color with a minimal head that lasts quite a while. No discernable aroma. Taste is roasted malts. Smooth and creamy. Enjoyable!

Look: Very dark brown. One finger of foamy white head with poor retention.
Smell: Bright, floral hops and caramel malt. Mild bubblegum note.
Taste: Very floral, but with limited bitterness. Almost like drinking perfume. Caramel malt barely distinguishable below the flowery flavor.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, even body with good carbonation.
Overall: An unusual use of hops, but ultimately not a bad beer.

16 ounce prowler into pint glass, filled on 9/15/2019. Pours slightly hazy deep orange/copper/light reddish color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky light khaki head with fantastic retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Fantastic appearance. Aromas of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, roasted nuts, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toffee, plum, pear, red apple, wood, herbal, grass, peppercorn, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready/light roasted malts, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast notes; with big strength. Taste of big caramel, brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, roasted nuts, and toasted biscuit; with lighter notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toffee, plum, pear, red apple, wood, herbal, grass, peppercorn, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, woody, grassy, peppery, roasted bitterness on the finish. Lingering notes of caramel, brown sugar, brown bread dough/crust, roasted nuts, toasted biscuit, chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toffee, plum, pear, red apple, wood, herbal, grass, peppercorn, and yeast/roast/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; with an awesome malt/bitterness balance, and no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors after the finish. Light-moderate increasing dryness from lingering hop/roast bitterness. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, creamy/bready/grainy, and fairly sticky/chalky mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol for 6%. Overall this is a fantastic altbier. All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready/light roasted malts, light-moderate earthy hops, and light fruity yeast flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the modestly bitter/drying finish; not overly bitter/roasted. Fantastic clean/rich Dark/Munich/light roasted malt showcase; balancing noble hops, and restrained fruity yeast. Mild residual sweetness with lingering dryness. A highly enjoyable offering, and outstanding style example. A bit more roasty than expected, but one of the best for the style I have had.
