2003 bottle, consumed 12/17/07.
Cloudy brown pour with surprising amount of lacing but no head. Yeast, cane sugar and alcohol aromas. Mild flavor, clean: brown sugar and some kind of yeast character. Simple. Some astringency, some alcohol bite.
Might have passed its prime. I think it would have really been something a year or two ago...

A rare beer offered once from Michael Jackson's camp... 2003 Edition, served in an oversize snifter at cellar temperature. Paired with a nice wedge of English Stilton.
330ml bottle with a Best Before End 2006 date printed on the label.
Appearance- Pours a clear, rich port red into the glass... a bit noisy, the bubbles race to the surface and pop quickly, leaving quite a mess behind. No lacing as expected for a 10% beer, just average at best. Great color though.
Smell- Quite a treat, the nose delivers the goods... chocolate, figs, and rich dates soaked in a boozy jacuzzi. The sweet, dessert-like aroma doesn't call out for cookies or cake, however... this cheese is a perfect companion. As the beer opens further, the chocolate malt becomes even more prominent and enjoyable.
Taste- I can certainly appreciate the direction that Toshi Ishii is taking this creative and daring beer... it has English properties with regard to the hop profile (East Kent Goldings and Fuggles) but it blossoms into an old-ale type digestif with its eventual sweet, smooth finish. The alcohol is so well hidden in the big, candied flavors that props must be given here.
Mouthfeel/Drinkability- This beer has an appropriately supple, pleasant weight in the mouth... but that's about all it offers. Whatever slight effervescence appears on the outset disappears right away, leaving pure liquid with no activity. While this isn't a complaint (because it works here), it's an ordinary experience for the style.
After swirling and drinking the enormous amount of sediment with the last three sips, the hops leave behind more of their trademark SoCal bitterness... a nod to the brewer's roots at Stone I'm sure. I enjoyed this *so* much more than the 2002 vintage, which was a different recipe altogether. Glad I've got one more to sample next Winter.
