Our Cooper’s Cloak series is a variant on the Drunkard’s Cloak of Medieval Europe. Our Cooper is not a drunkard but rather a connoisseur who enjoys the refinement of a thoughtfully constructed barrel-aged beer. This American Barleywine features strong and complex notes of dark fruit, warm vanilla, and rich toffee. Drink now and take home a bottle to cellar for a special occasion.

On tap at brewery:
Clear amber red - like a mix of garnet and topaz with an old yellowing newspaper head that provides an opaque lace sheet (note: second pour’s lacing was less). Just a lovely looking beer!

Nose is a little heavy on the wood (the Coopers Cloak series is the barrel series, it seems), but has nice toffee notes, vanilla, some pine and berry hop notes. Not as hoppy as other American BWs, but more aggressive than the typical English style.

Little sweet up front, with leanings towards an Old Fashion. Honey, booze, dark cherry, caramel morphs to a spicy and piney backing that leans to the American side.

Slightly sticky but medium in body with a bit of warmth. I was hugely impressed by this offering - it hit on the key characteristics and the barrel treatment filled in the right places. Well done!

Bottle review:
Look is a tad darker, but just as pretty if decanted. Nose brings a tad more booze and brings the Old Fashion vibe earlier in the review that tap. Taste isn’t quite as bitter, little more spice than pine. Different days, formats and impressions but a good barleywine in bottle firm as well (just not as good as the draft version).
