BOTTLE: Purchased at Alko Arkadia in Helsinki. 33cl. Brown glass. Unbranded black pry-off crown cap. Appealing label design.
Reviewed live as a double IPA per the label. Expectations are above average. Served cold into a pilsner glass in Helsinki.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~1/4" wide. Off-white colour. Average foaminess, frothiness, etc. Retention is below average - ~1 minute. Leaves no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Clear vibrant copper. Translucent and transparent. Text can be plainly read through the body given its high clarity. Clean, with no visible yeast or sediment. Not hazy or cloudy.
Appears adequately carbonated. Looks good for an imperial IPA, if common.
AROMA: Ample crystal and pale malts seem well balanced alongside an assertive hop profile. Hop character is resinous, coating, oily, floral, and fruity - though no specific fruits ring distinct.
Aromatic intensity is average.
No alcohol or off-notes is/are detectable. Yeast attenuation seems apt judging by the perceived moderate sweetness.
TASTE: The pale malt backbone seems supplemented by crystal malts and sweeter caramalt, balancing the bitterness of the hop bitterness. Hop profile is assertive, and follows the aroma except it isn't as resinous as anticipated. Floral and vaguely fruity, with mild oils. No pine, juicy fruit, or citrus, though I do find some rindy almost grapefruity bitterness on the climax.
As it comes to temperature, tropical fruits emerge, but none ring distinct, and they never really fit seamlessly into the rest of the build.
TEXTURE: Coating and a biteen sticky, accentuating the modest resins featured in the taste. Aptly medium-bodied, with moderate thickness, heft, and weight. Overcarbonated and a bit syrupy, to its detriment. Has too heavy a presence on the palate for its flavour profile. There just isn't enough depth of flavour to justify this texture.
OVERALL: Drinkable, sure, though the 9% ABV is much more noticeable than it should be. While there's plenty of hop flavour here - which is surprisingly uncommon in Finnish imperial IPAs - it's not a great beer in its style on account of its slight imbalance and its shortcomings in terms of its (relative lack of) complexity and subtlety. All in all, it's well put together for what it is, but the discerning drinker is better off sticking to imports when in Finland.
