Inspired by the abbey but put together in a garage, the Braxton brewers clang around and make a Kringle, a Belgian styled quadruple ale that celebrates the dark fruit, spice and bright effervescence that makes the style so complex, robust yet danderously drinkable.
Pale rust in color and cast in a foggy haze, the racy ale builds an ecru blanket of cream and sepia stain. A bold perfume shines a light on vinous fruit, dried, fruit, dark, macerated fruit and an overall spicy holiday character. Sweet on the early palate, the light cakey taste also holds flavors of hard candy, fruit juice and powdered sugar.
And then the middle palate explodes with flavors. Cherry, apple, light prune, plum, sultan and dates. But the prominent fruit is spiced pear. Juicy, dripping and succulent, the esters of pear are resounding, especially with the spices of allspice, clove, cinnamon and white pepper. Rosé wine and a hint of brandy brightens up the finish while the taste of pear mingle with a fruitcake medley for a perfect after dinner digestive.
Full bodied and remaining sweet late on the palate, the ale departs from the extreme malty dry character of abbey versions, but as a richer, sweeter and somewhat lighter flavor profile, this garage taste carries a ton of potential and curiosity.
