Presentation: Sampled on Tap during a recent visit to the Steelhead Brewing Company, Irvine location.
Appearance: Dark black on the counter, but raising the Pint pot realizes a very dark brown body that sports a super dark cocoa head the reminded me of chocolate milk with bubbles blown through it. Good head retention, solid conditioning and a solid overall look.
Nose: Strong odors, dark chocolate, Espresso coffee, cocoa beans and a rich dark aspect to it, some feint brandy hints.
Taste: Dark chocolate melds with a bitterness which gains a cocoa bean edge and then a definitive Espresso coffee finish. Fruity at times with some vinous traits as it warms, but good ones, certainly no detractions here. The overall make-up is of a rich brew with plenty of the elemental ingredients to keep the mind and palate busy.
Mouthfeel: Brusque body at first, but when examined it holds depth and the overall feel is of a beefy Stout with the finishing texture of a rich Espresso coffee, yet it just lacks that little special edge to warrant a 4.0. Surface feel on the tongue is impressive, and it sinks down with a mild silky feel. Rewarding stuff.
Drinkability: Very enjoyable and despite its big hitting profile this one drinks remarkably well. Not one I could drink all night, but I could certainly be enticed to a couple of Pints of this one.
Overall: This was the second brew that I tried at Steelhead (Irvine) during my recent visit this past weekend. Far better than the watery Bombay Bomber IPA and good enough to have me return to Steelhead in Irvine to sample the rest of the brews on offer in the near future when I have time to do so.
