Style: Scotch Ale / Wee Heavy

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
OG 1080; 28 IBU
Formerly called Arcadia Scotch Ale

Our tribute to the Scottish Highlands, this beer offers a gorgeous garnet color joined by the aroma of ripe plums and freshly-baked biscuits. The rich, full-bodied texture reveals notes of roasted chestnuts and caramel in the smooth single-malt style brew. Balanced with just the right amount of hop character, this beer delights with crisp alcohol finish.

If you want a dark beer that's creamy, smooth, and lacking any ounce of bitterness, this is your pour. Deep brown, some cloudiness as far as I can tell. Cream head that pours thick but dissipates before too long to a cloudy film. Sweet, woody flavors. Not the strong coffee or chocolate of a porter or stout.

Biggest letdown is the smell. It's a weak, sweet, malty nose without much character. Overall a good drink, albeit rather atypical.

Loch Down pours a dark and deep brown color, with a nice sized, long lasting and lacing head. Sweet aroma, lots of earth. Flavor is sweet, again, lots of earth, peat and a boozy and malty backbone. A little light on the palate. Overall, pretty good, sweeter and a little easier to drink.

Although it looks fine and smells ok, this is one of the worst craft beers I've ever had. Like other reviewers, I thought it had a very odd sour taste that made it virtually undrinkable. I ordered it at a restaurant and the waitress seemed a bit surprised by the order. Perhaps they just do not sell much of it and it was far past its prime.

Look: Dark amber on the reddish side with a thin tan head.

Smell: Hoo boy, this is bizarre. Really heavy on yeast and dough, which is unusual in a beer. There's practically nothing else to it.

Taste: Rather than malt or hops, yeast is the majority of the flavor. If I didn't know this bottle was new, I would be worried it had gone bad. Scotch ales are supposed to be sweet, but this is just concerning.

Mouthfeel: A little thick, but you have to really be paying attention to notice it. Plenty of carbonation.

Overall: Definitely not recommended unless you're really itching for a drink.

A - Dark brown body with red highlights, semi-transparent, with a thin light tan head that fades to nothing, and no real lacing.

S - Dough and molasses, cola caramel notes, and a hint of wet-rind cheese in the close.

T - Bread-like malts, dark and lush, sweet toffee, smoky molasses, and a close that suggests cherry juice and a slightly sour acidity.

M - Sticky open, acidic close. The result is full of cola-like notes.

O - Decent. Typical bread and sweetness is counterpointed with a more sour note in the close, making for a solidly drinkable beer, even if it is not particularly nuanced.
