Broken Goblet Brewing Co. "Nothing Forever"
16 fl. oz. can; "BORN ON DATE 12/08 2022".
$14/ 4-pk of 16 oz. cans at the brewery on 11 February 2023
Notes via stream of consciousness: I asked myself what the best glass for this beer would be and decided on a dimpled half liter mug. The 16 oz. can filled the glass all the way up to the 0,5 l mark with enough room on top for a fingers width of tan foam. Unfortunately the head has already dropped but I'm not sure if this mug is actually "beer clean" as I rarely use it. I definitely did clean it when I got back from Germany though. Anyway, the liquid below is a very hazy dark brown. The aroma is chocolatey, a little smokey, fruity (plums, prunes, raisins, red grape, and just a hint of green banana), and subtly spicy. Those notes carry into the flavor in that order. What I'm missing here is a rich, melanoidin-laden and bready maltiness. That applies to both the aroma and the flavor, and it's a little bit of a let down. The dark fruit, touch of banana, and lightly spicy and clove like characteristics are nice but without the support of a rich and wheaty malt base they're kind of left hanging in the wind. It's otherwise nicely balanced with a little bit of sweetness, very little bitterness, and just a minor presence of alcohol that helps to dry it in the end. It's medium bodied on the higher end, and smooth with just a caress of tiny-bubbled carbonation on the tongue. It's all put together well, and the fermentation was obviously carried out at a proper temperature as the phenols and esters are in check, so I'm guessing that there was an issue with temperature in the mash tun. It's a shame but it's still a decent beer. I'm hoping that they'll brew this again and nail it.
