definitely a different type of steam beer, the malt base is a fair bit darker than is common in the style, past burnt orange to almost light amber, good head on it, fluffy and airy and lasting. smells bready, more robust than the paler examples of the style, more hearty, more autumnal, pretty groovy really, with hints of brown sugar and bread crusts, maybe a little honey sweetness there. no real yeast character in this one, very few of their beers had any at all, and its sort of missing as a uniting element i think, but the grain carries the flavor load pretty well. nice body to this, average carbonation, more exciting than the style usually is due to the more interesting mix of malts. still, something is missing for me here, and its the yeast, but the beer on the whole is very good, finishing a little sweet but its appealing in this one. these guys made great beer across the board, and i liked basically everything i had there. i look forward to going back and watching them evolve, they seem to have a half step on a lot of the local competition in terms of overall quality.

(From 2 month old notes) at the tasting room, into a shaker.

beautiful bright hazy rusty orange, creamy head. Fairly faint nose that gets picked up in the taste profile. Malt isn't heavy or rich, but its got some nice crackery bready (and maybe even nutty) notes and then some lovely bright orange, melon, and peachy fruitiness. Very smooth and creamy, light for the style and really refreshing. Delicious and memorable...I don't usually love the style, but this may be one of the better commons I've had.
