650 ml bomber imported from British Columbia.
Pours a clear deep amber to copper colour (though second half got the dregs and thus a bit cloudy) with finger of puffy light beige head.
Bready smoky malt on the nose - caramel, a bit of an earthy note with a touch of fruity floral hop aroma.
Tastes of bready caramel malt with a distinct smokiness without being meaty; there is a definite sweet fruity floral flavour - apple/pear like - sweetness of the honey with minimal bitterness.
Medium bodied with decent carbonation - smooth with a sweeter than smoky finish.

650ml bottle - made with BC organic honey, and beechwood smoked malt, which is great, but isn't a doppelbock more of an early Springtime sort of release? Just sayin.

This beer pours a mostly clear, bright medium copper amber colour, with a near-teeming tower of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly ecru head, which leaves some layered and streaky cirrus cloud form lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of somewhat meaty roasted caramel malt, a further wet ashiness, some earthy honeyed cracker character, brown sugar syrup, and rather tame leafy, weedy, and musky floral green hop bitters. The taste is bready and doughy caramel malt, some toasted and biscuity toffee sweetness, more free-range woody char, a minor mixed and singed pome fruitiness, ephemeral yeasty notes, and more well understated earthy, musty, and gently perfumed floral hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly restrained in its simpleton frothiness, the body a solid middleweight, and mostly smooth, but for, y'know, that, whatsit called thing - oh yeah, porcine smokiness taking the piss here. It finishes on the sweet side, the big-ass malt not taking the lingering char's challenge lightly.

Overall - this is a fairly representative version of the style, the beechwood quality DEFINITELY more akin to Bamberg brewers than anything their distant American cousins produce. At any rate, well-rendered, and enjoyable, with the near 8 points of the ol' wowee sauce barely noticeable. Good stuff.

Bottled October 23, 2015. Drank October 31, 2015. Purchased from B.C. Liquor store.

L - Pours a dark amber. Very little head. Quickly disappears.

S - Smells like smoked wood chips with a hint of honey sweetness.

T - Smells much like the taste. Biscuity malt taste with a little sweetness that lingers on the palate. Very drinkable especially considering the strength. Light toffee / caramelized sugar notes. Very mild to non-existant hop bitterness. The taste is delicious and really unique.

F - nice mouth feel. Dense carbonation.

0 - A unique take on the style. Wouldn't be my go-to beer. Definitely a great beer for a cool, late fall day.
