Pouring a beautiful copper with a rich German malt aroma and subtle sweetness, the Steel & Oak Marzen soars upon a delicate balance of Pilsner, Vienna and Melanoidin malts that will remind you of the warmer months ahead.

Clear orange-amber color. Poured a very short head that dropped down to a patchy skiff in seconds. Low flow of mixed size bubbles from the bottom of the glass. Left no lacing.

Sweet malty smell with a little touch of some sour funk. Light smell of a partially fermented sour fruit or vegetable that I could not identify. It was like sauerkraut had been made from apples. Swirling the glass kicked up a mild barnyard that faded away after a few seconds.

Slightly sweet malt flavor. Has a light dose of mild barnyard that complements the flavor, although it does seem out of place with a Märzen. A hint of vegetal hops. Very mild bitters. The aftertaste is a stronger bitter and more pronounced hops. Light malt shows up for a few seconds before being joined by the barnyard as it all fades down leaving the bitter to the end.

Just a bit of tongue tingling. Turns into a light foam that doesn't have enough body to feel creamy, but comes close. All the liquid turns into foam, despite the apparent low carbonation.

The barnyard smell and taste is a nice complement to the malt flavors, but it is out of place for a standard Märzen style. I liked it, but I was expecting a Märzen and would have liked this more without the barnyard.

22 ounce bomber from Vernon, BC trip.
Pours a beautifully clear copper colour with finger of tawny head.
Aroma malty with caramel, toffee, hints of spice and some subtle fruitiness - almost cherry.
Tastes of smooth and clean caramel malt, fresh bread, notes of spice with just a hint of hop bitterness to balance the sweetness.
Smooth medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation - clean and sweet but not overly so - exceptionally drinkable - would repeat any time.
