its hard to be too critical of this one, a full brett fermented brown saison with currants, which sounds so sexy on paper and really does taste pretty good, but its just not quite as refined and professional as i want it to be, my first beer from these guys. deep and dark from the bottle, an aggressive pour yielding only a short tan head which doesnt stay long. looks purple tinted dark brown, nearly black, fuller bodied too. aroma is nice, i get the astringent fresh currants right away, and a lot of acid here for just brett, it smells puckery and sour, bacterial as much as it does funky, but with cool chocolate notes and roast in the grain, cigar and coffee and brown sugar, highly intriguing. the flavor is cool, funky and sour alike, but really really acidic, red wine vinegar sort of takes over, and while i like what the fruit adds and the relative complexity of this, a large bottle ends up being a chore to get through at this ph. chocolate covered berries, port wine, and toffee come in, lemon and nail polish remover, feeling almost gritty at times. cooly woody to me, also intense at the same time that its mellow, really full of flavor and well built, but just more sour than i care for generally speaking. cool beer though, they have created something very unique here, but it ends up being a little harsh and not all the way worth the price. ill be curious to try more of their wild beer down the road...
