the hoppy beers from thee guys have always been strong, but this recent round has been epic, and this spelt based new england style ipa is right there with the best of them. i like spelt in beer, but it always seems to end up in fermentation forward beers like saison, and sometimes its contribution is easy to lose. here though, it stands out to me, doing a lot to sort of cream up the mouthfeel, but also adding a little bit of an earthy bite, like whole grain bread with a little peppery kick, its a neat base for a big dry hop profile, and i think this beer is smartly constructed. the hops are nice in this, and the beer doesnt need to be super thick and sedimented and milky to highlight and extend them. ripe melon and guava notes here, more familiar tangerine as well, a bit of green herbal spice, nice with the spelt, and a dryness that comes up pretty quick for how bold the hops are. really heady sativa, candied grape, and bright lemon at the end, super summery and quite a bit different from the standard overall. i feel like everyone is doing the same thing with these hazy beers, so its cool to have a few in here that were a little deviant. the spelt makes this unique, but the hop profile is distinctive as well. super drinkable, professionally made, these guys are hot right now!
