Look: Cola coloured body with a slightly off-white head, Lacing sticks around.

Smell: Light coffee with notes more reminicent of gold lagers. No reall hop presence, brown bread type maltiness.

Taste: Again with the light coffee, but then it almost feels more like a Pils, light maltiness, slight lemon.

Feel: A session lager more then anything. Nothing you don't get out of a macro.

Overall: It's not a Bock, nor a Vienna or even a Schwarzbier. This beer if anything is a black Pils and I'm not sure that does it any favors. Decent enough but not something to write home about.

650ml bomber poured into tulip a ways back (from notes)

A slight haze in a brownish amber body, three fingers of tan foam has decent retention but only manages to leave a few polka dots for lace

S dark caramels, nutty, dark bread, some herbal hops, and a hint of plum and raisin

T mimics the smell but a little more dried dark fruit and some iced tea, decent but nothing really memorable

M not a whole lot of body and it foams up a little, a strange over ripe fruity nut bar finish

O decent but basic, easy enough to drink under a hot sun but nothing to write home about

I don't think I'd list this as a bock but I could see someone thinking that, I find it hard to place myself, brown ale, Munich dunkel lager, schwarzbier, Vienna lager, could all work really

650ml bottle. Hmmmm...the name screams out Vienna Lager or Schwarzbier, let's have the ol' look-see then, shall we?

This beer pours a clear, dark red-brick brown colour, with one flabby finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and certainly bubbly ecru head, which leaves some swollen rain cloud lace around the glass as things duly recede.

It smells of lightly toasted pale malt, biscuity caramel, a dry oily nuttiness, and plain leafy, earthy, and somewhat herbal hops. The taste is bready, doughy caramel malt, an equally prominent crackery pale graininess, hints of bittersweet chocolate, a mixed bowl of pithy nuts, faint fruity root beer notes, and tame earthy, leafy, and mildly grassy hops.

The carbonation is generally supportive in its plain-Jane frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and fairly smooth, with a nascent creaminess building as it warms. It finishes sweet, the caramel, nutty cocoa, and understated hops coming to terms.

I'm getting American brown ale characteristics all over the place, but if I have to go with what the brewers here probably intended, this is indeed a Vienna Lager, and a mostly enjoyable one at that. Worthy of giving a go, if only to shore up what one might think a lager can be.

This is a really solid brew. A bit darker than a marzen, but certainly more hoping than a dunkel. Probably somewhere between a Schwarzbier and a Vienna lager. I hope this catches on and gets on-tap everywhere!

Vienna lager style reminiscent of original Mexican beers. Malt forward and solid hop presence
