12oz chalice at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. A fresh hopped India Session Ale of some persuasion.
This beer appears a slightly hazy, pale golden yellow colour, with one skinny finger of sudsy, wispy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves some eroded limestone cliff lace around the glass as things slowly sink away.
It smells of grainy and crackery pale malt, a small earthy spiciness, weak domestic citrus and pome fruit, a hint of phenolic yeastiness, and some plain leafy, herbal, and musty floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, some white and black pepper dust spice, muddled citrus and tropical fruity notes, more untamed estery yeast, and further understated leafy, musky, and dead floral 'verdant' hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-pinging frothiness, the body a so-so middleweight, and not really all that smooth, as that weird herbal essence takes more than a minor toll here. It finishes trending dry, the strange hop and yeasty characters running the asylum.
Overall - yeah, there is something rotten in the profile of the fresh hops employed here. It's too herbal and estery to be considered enjoyable, so much so that I'm kicking myself for not having ordered the 8oz serving, and thus at least saving a few bucks.
