This four grain barleywine inspired beer was brewed with barley, rye, wheat and corn in collaboration with our friends at Laws Whiskey House. It was then aged for 9 months in their Four Grains Bourbon barrels with brett. After the slumber, it was blended and bottled by hand in a strip mall with love.

Had on tap. Murky orange pour with a white ring. Smell is wild! Getting brett and barley with various citrus, taffy, apricot and bright oak, woah. Taste leads with orange, apircot, lime, and lemon, in that order of intensity, with caramel, molasses, barley, and worn oak contrasting, finished by brett, bourbon mash, and a hint of grain, this is crazy and delicious. Feel is starts wet but finishes dry and thin, booze is dangerously hidden, brett is strong but not overpowering. Extra points for outside the box creativity!

Laws Whiskey four grain bourbon barrel-aged four grain barleywine inspired ale with Brett. 12.6% abv, bottled 1/3/18, drank April 11, 2020.

Look: Bronzey liquid with bright gold highlights, lots of bubbles streaming up to a thin cap of tiny off-white bubbles that dissipates somewhat quickly. Some alcohol legs and very little lacing. Everything as expected for a higher proof sour beer.
Smell: Fairly delicate for such a big beer. Light lemon-orange zest, pepper, subtle brie-like funk (almost buttermilk or light, sweet cultured butter and very subtle truffle), white flowers and white wine (chamomile tea, Riesling), a little bit of sweet bourbon-infused cherry syrup in the background.
Taste: A lot of the same things as the aroma but sweet up front then turns into a combination of bitter, tart, and spicy hops and grain and acid, and some earthy funk throughout that shines through a little more towards the finish. Lingering dry truffle-y oak, light pepper, and some dry lemon wedge (zest, pith, pulp, and all). More rye comes through in the middle and more sweetness like bourbon and semi-sweet white wine near the end and in the aftertaste as it warms up.
Mouthfeel: Light and fluffy, pillowy. Nothing unexpected, just good.

Overall, an excellent tart and surprisingly spicy beer with just enough sweetness and a smidgen of funk to bump the balance and complexity up a notch, and a perfect amount of barrel character that is present but doesn't get in the way of anything good going on. Unique for both barleywines and sour ales. Its transformation as it warms is interesting, and it really shines around room temperature. Loved it.
