It is against my religion to buy crowlers from bottle shops, but that magical word “rye” on this 750ML bad boy means I’ll be doing some Hail Mary’s tomorrow. Split with my wife.
The pour is dark black – no head, always a danger in this format. Nose brings roast, black licorice, & tiny bit of smoke. Eh.
Massive Aggressive – Rye Whiskey Barrel Aged suffers from an inferior packaging concept. It’s flat & slightly oxidized, neither of which does the beer any favors. Flavors include black licorice left next to a campfire, roast, hard throbbing wood, & a rye-imparted spiciness that suffuses the brew from front to back. Half the crowler was just fine.
IMHO, breweries are doing themselves no favors allowing crowlers to collect on liquor store shelves & coolers. Let me buy it at the brewery, take it home, bust it open & drink it. These things don’t last well. There’s a good beer here, but poor format choices reduce is to just decent (& it could use more barrel, too).

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
