Dark version of the regular Blackhorse kolsch, brewed for GABS festival in Melbourne, May 2014, and tried there on tap.
Pours a brown colour, slight haze with beige bubbly head. Sinks unevenly and looks generally imperfect. Which of course makes it natural, which makes me like it.
Smells spicy and slightly herbal, with a touch of bitter nuttiness to the malt. Some caramel character midway, cinnamon and sweet spice. Fairly subdued but fair amount of character.
Taste is more like a dunkelweizen, which is kind of what I expected from the name. Caramel notes, vanilla and cocoa blend with banana and sweet spice on the back. Some herbal notes and maybe a touch of black tea. Decent slightly toasty character overall.
Decent body, goes down pretty smoothly.
What is this beer meant to be? It's a weird combination but ultimately a decent result. Interested to try their regular kolsch now, especially as I generally hate kolsches.
