Pinelands Brewing Co. "Gnarly Pine Barley Wine Ale"
1 pint can, "CANNED ON 11/06/19 10:43 PURE AS THE PINES"
$4.49 @ Shop Rite Wine & Spirits, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Labeled at 9.5% Alc/Vol. It's poured a mildly hazy reddish copper colored body beneath a short head of creamy off-white foam. The head retention seems to be quite good, and there's some nice lace where the head has dropped. The aroma suggests medium and dark caramel malts and spicy and piney hops. On to the flavor... well that's pretty nice. It's malty but not overdone. It's bready and caramelish, backed by an apple-like fruitiness from the yeast. The hops found in the nose return, and it's piney, and spicy - unless of course that's coming from the alcohol. It doesn't seem like 9.5% though. I would have guess 8. A firm bitterness balances it nicely, although the alcohol and pine notes make it seem a little sharper than it actually is. In the mouth it's medium bodied but with a bit of a dextrinous feel, and smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. For my tastes I feel it's a little light in body, but it's still stylistically acceptable. Nicely done.

Poured from a tallboy can into a Dogfish Head tulip
L: Dark copper brown pour... nearly clear with 2 fingers of foamy white head. Great ring of lacing.
S: Toasted malts and grains. Dark sugars and piney hops.
T.F: Follow the nose. Earthy... caramel and toffee mixed with grains. A bit of fruit... some piney hops and bitterness to balance the sweet. A little boozy but not overpowering. Better as it warms. Creamy on the tongue and medium bodied.
O: A pretty standard American Style barleywine. Big grains and sugars... not as boozy as some others I've had. Made a decent nightcap.
