1L howler from the Century Park Liquor Depot (hey Sebastian!), as apparently they (and a few others in the chain) are the only current Alberta licensees for this particular Lotusland product of note.

This beer pours a murky, medium bronzed amber colour, with three pudgy fingers of puffy, rocky, and somewhat creamy ecru head, which leaves some decent layered streaky lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of bready and grainy caramel malt, a bit of earthy yeastiness, some indistinct red orchard fruitiness (I'm looking for cherry, I really, really am!), and very subtle leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, a still hard to pinpoint dark fruity character (could be sour cherries, but I am yet to be convinced), a further biscuity cracker thing, fading estery yeast, and more well understated earthy, leafy, and musty hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly restrained in its palate-coating frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and sort of smooth, as the generic tartness doesn't own up to its origin, but that hardly matters at this point in the process. It finishes off-dry, the malt hanging on like the boss that it is, amongst some lingering yeasty and fruity characters.

Overall - this comes across as neither a cherry nor a Saison-forward offering, as the fruit and base beer essences seem to be quite off-base throughout the whole affair. That's not to say that this is a bad brew, it's just not what it claims to be. Drinkable, sure, however, I'm wishing that I had a label to go by, so I could complain a touch more competently.
