650ml bottle - 'Layered | Effervescent | Steam'. Good that they got that little 'steam' dig in there.
This beer pours a clear, medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly off-white head, which leaves a bit of sticky snow rime lace around the glass as it quickly sinks out of sight.
It smells of biscuity and lightly toasted caramel malt, a bit of mixed pome and citrus fruitiness, subtle earthy yeast, and more plain leafy, weedy, and floral green hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, biscuity wheat crackers, some free-agent ashiness, gently phenolic yeast, overcooked apples, and more understated earthy, leafy, and musty verdant hoppiness.
The carbonation is adequate in its palate-assuring frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, with just a touch of char perhaps taking things down a notch or so here. It finishes off-dry, the biscuity malt character predominating.
Overall - this is a rather well-made and enjoyable version of the style, nice and malty, with an agreeable enough hop offset. Easy to drink, and worth checking out, especially if you typically think that Anchor Steam is all that and a bag of organic chips.
