Served on Nitro in the taproom:
Look: I was surprised by how light it was. At first I assumed it was nitro bubbles settling, but it remained a dark tan color. It wasn't unattractive, but it wasn't what I was expecting. It was also nearly opaque.
Smell: Primarily coffee and dark malt.
Taste: The anise and cardamom came through well without being overpowering, but I didn't detect as much hazelnut as I was expecting. I think the spice additions balanced well considering how strong the flavors from the darker malts used are. There was a decent amount of booziness on the finish, which is expected with such a high ABV.
Feel: Granted the beer was on nitro, but it was a bit thinner than I was used to for such a big beer.
Overall: It was a very interesting and complex beer, which SP Brewing isn't afraid to tackle. They did well with it, and i think their next iteration will be even better.
