Sheaf Toss Wee Heavy is an ode to the renowned feats of strength on display at the Scottish Highland Games. Crafted from distillers' malt and traditional floor malted grain, only the strongest of competitors could the massive sacks of barley found in this Scotch Ale. Layers of sweet caramel coat your mouth, while a touch of roast and earthy hops subconsciously remind you of the fertile farmland. Our own cherrywood smoked malt and Bourbon barrels staves form a unique tartan of complexity and strength. You may never toss a caber or play Scotland the Brave on a set of bagpipes, but you will feel more than a wee bit Scottish after a Sheaf Toss.

Clear, deep garnet with ruby highlights. The slight beige head quickly fades leaving no lacing. Each sip leaves a thin film on a Gordon thistle glass.

Malt is clearly the primary focus with sweet earthy peat followed by caramel and plums.

Flavor follows the nose adding sweetness and toasted malt. Smoke faintly drones in the background. Plums and a hint of cherry are revealed with slight warming. The finish is long and modestly sweet.

The body is full and chewy, velvety and just short of syrupy. Alcohol is well concealed while the carbonation is soft.

This can was aged a few months, but my initial fresh experience was brighter and more full of character. I enjoyed it while watching the Masters on a perfect early spring afternoon while birds softly sang in the background. This beer is an example of the pleasant surprises that one can find if their open to the possibility.

A: Pours a clear deep garnet reddish brown (close to being opaque) in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising slowly along the edges of the glass and moderate crimson red highlights. The beer has a finger tall foamy tan head that quickly reduces to a large patch of thin film covering about 75% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of toasted + caramel malts with a moderate amount of sweetness with a light aroma of roasted + smoked malts and earthy hops. Light hints of toasted oak.

T: Upfront there is a slightly stronger than moderate flavor of toasted + caramel malts with light to moderate flavors of lightly smoked malts with a slightly less than moderate amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by a hint of toasted oak and a light to moderate flavor of earthy hops. Light amounts of bitterness from the hops but the lingering flavor is that of caramel malts.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth.

O: Enjoyable and surprisingly easy to drink considering the strength of this beer, the alcohol is very well hidden.
