500 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 4.1%. Pale golden colour, moderate white head. Moderate aroma of fruity, grassy and herbal hops. Refreshing flavour, medium sweet, herbal notes. A beer for a warm summer’s day. In a blind test I might mistake it for a pilsener.

Bottle. 4.1% ABV. Labelled as Blonde Ale. Wheat adjunct.
Thin, clear straw appearance. Wispy head.
Light aroma of citrus and straw.
Low in flavour reflecting the smell.
Thin body.
I expect better from Theakston.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2014. Purchased a while back from a supermarket. The label mentions that it is named after an old Masham brewery that Theakston took over in 1919.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A hazy golden hue with medium carbonation and some faint floating sediment. Yields a large head of creamy white foam that lasts for a few minutes before reducing to a patchy surface layer. Aroma of grainy malt with hints of fruity ale yeast, grass/hay, mild honey, faint floral notes, vague stewed hops and a twinge of caramel. Slightly sweet. Balanced but dull.

Tastes of light malt with a mild, dry finish. Notes of subtle grain, fruity ale yeast, grass/hay, faint floral hints, a touch of honey and stewed hops. Possesses a delicate sweetness, followed by a lingering leafy character upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth but a shade too flat; decent body but underpowered carbonation that results in a lack of texture. Lightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of weak stewed hops, ale yeast and faint malt.

OK but nothing special. Looks nice, however the aroma and flavour are bland and middling in character. So-so body. A typical pale ale that doesn't dare to rock the boat. Easy-drinking but no need to seek it out.

Tasted from a 500 ml bottle bought at Rota Naval Station, Spain in Nov 2012. The beer is NOT retired.

A - Very light straw color; perfectly clear. Pure white head 1 cm thick, but it quickly faded. Nice lacing. Pretty veil of tiny bubbles constantly rising through the beer. Very champagne-like appearance.

S - Soft hops (maybe Saaz?) dominate. They do not smell English. No other aromas make it to detectable levels. Very clean.

T - Initial taste is gentle English malt, slightly bready and sweet. This is followed by a hint of hops flavor that quickly fades, leaving nothing. Very brief palate with no aftertaste, Extremely clean, but also uninteresting.

M - Very thin body--too thin. Sharp, acidic bite from carbonation. Some hops bitterness, but at a low level.

O - This is a very well-made, clean beer, but it has no standout characteristics. It is very Kolsch-like. It is also very forgettable.

The bottle has changed and so slightly has the name, the word 'bitter' is no longer present and the label now reads as
below-

'Named after an old brewing company we took over in 1919 and situated just a stone's through from our Theakston brewery here in Marsham.
It is rumoured that Lightfoot's were taken over because they had a better cricket team than our own!
The Lightfoot site is now home to the White Bear Hotel,
our much-loved brewery tap.

Right back to the actual beerPours a slightly hazy lemon yellow body with spritely white head.

Big hop aromas with citrus hints and floral notes.

The taste is surprisingly good staring with wheat turning to malt and driving through to a dry hoppy bitter finish.

Slightly watery MF but not bad on the carb front.

Not the continental blonde as suggested but a decent enough bitter funnily enough.

Brown 500ml bottle, best before 31 May 2008, opened and reviewed 9th May 2008. The label says 4.1% Vol.

Poured into a Berliner Kindl half litre straight glass.

Looks like it should, an English Bitter light amber colour, slight haze and a huge white foaming head.

The rear label claims it has a 'peach-like' element in both aroma and palate. I couldn't detect it in either. There was a floral like smell though, so I was half way there.

No great feel to this beer, refreshing and easy to drink but nothing to rave about. There are hops and a yeast presence but this is not a beer I'll be seeking out again.
