August 2008: Cask at the GBBF 2008. Black colour, low head. Nice roasty aroma, notes of coffee, liquorice and dark chocolate. Roasty flavour with just a subtle fruity acidity.

500ml, bottle-conditioned. Pours almost black with tan head. Aroma faint chocolate. Taste chocolate. Palate: gentle carbonation, smooth, medium-bodied. Overall: pleasant porter. Dark malt dominates hop.

500ml (Bottle conditioned): best before the end of Oct 2012, poured into my Abbot Ale glass tankard on 11 Aug 2012 during an IPA and Porter evening.
Jet black with a full, deep tan coloured foaming head.
Burnt malts everywhere in my bottle: so powerful hardly anything else was detectable. As the beer warmed is allowed some vanilla notes to express themselves but otherwise it was a 'peat bog' of a beer (which I quite liked).

Presentation: One of four ever-rotating Guest Beers on sale at the Wakefield Labour Club (a.k.a. The Red Shed) during a recent trip back home to England.
Oval Pumpclip is dark brown with a series of thin light colored vertical stripes. Has a picture of Beowulfs mask underneath which the words Beowulf - Forest of Mercia - Finns Hall Porter in a dark red lettering. Listed in small text at the bottom as 4.7%ABV.
Appearance: Dark brown body, clarity was excellent with a ruby hue when held to the light. Beige head is an expansive frothy affair which is far from appealing. Conditioning was healthy and fresh. OK but it doesnt look like anything like a Porter that is nearly 5%.
Nose: Caramel and soft sweet bonfire toffee. Malts with a roasted dimension. Sugary hints with a dark chocolate whiff here and there.
Taste: Burnt porridge, roasted malts and a sugary sweet angle seem muddled. Urgh! Strange stuff, I couldnt quite get round what this trying to do, I suspect that a mixture of trying to be Old English coupled with an intentional Old School Porter sourness went a bit awry in the finished product.
Mouthfeel: I double checked the Pumpclip to check the strength, yep 4.7%, pretty high in UK terms for a Real Ale. Disappointing feeling of burnt granulated sugar dissolved into common or garden tap water. Thin, watery and sugary with burnt sweetness all over. The texture is thin, with no depth. Far from the dark complex monster that I expected.
Drinkability: A difficult one to get on with to be brutally honest. Far from approachable it is a specialist effort that seems to be earthy in its composition. I just didnt care for it at all. This one went straight back after only a few mouthfuls and some seriously funny looks. I knew it wouldnt settle right. A return of nearly 90% gets a 1.0 sadly. I got a free replacement Pint of something else though, gotta love the Customer Service in the Red Shed.
Overall: Not a favorite of mine, or of many other punters in the Red Shed, so much so that this one stayed on the Handpump for 3 or 4 days during subsequent visits, not that this is a bad thing, but it is twice as long as usual and is a demonstration of how well received a beer is usually. Unusual stuff, bordering on being outright bloody weird and just way too thin as well, especially given the strength. If you see it, get a Half-Pint to start with.
