On-draught in Wroclaw for 14 zloty/pint. Imperial IPA. 8.00% ABV.
A: Standard for style. Your usual soft beige cap and bright copper body. Head is creamy and lasts a good 6-7 minutes. Leaves thick albeit uneven lacing as it recedes. No yeast is visible in the body.
Sm: Citrusy hops, floral hops, juiciness, a hint of rind, tangerine peel. Maltwise, I get pale and maybe biscuit, but there's no overdone caramalt sweetness or anything.
Aromatic intensity is average. Hop profile seems interesting. This suggests a hop-forward imperial IPA with more up its sleeve than most European attempts at the style.
T: Balanced yet hop-forward, with some juicy, floral, citrusy, and lightly rindy hop notes coming together in interesting ways. Pale malts balance the beer out, preventing any untamed hop bitterness from dragging on the palate. No obnoxious sweet caramalt here.
I've had hoppier, intricate, more subtle, more interesting beers in the style. But this is likable balanced stuff, and beats the average American IPA in my book. It's nice to see a brewery putting out an imperial IPA that brings the hops but keeps them in check with pale malts...if only many American breweries could do the same instead of engaging in dicksizing contests with IBUs and hop quantities.
Tends more rindy on the finish, imbuing the aftertaste with a bit more bitterness.
Mf: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, highly carbonated, a biteen refreshing, lightly oily. Not a perfect companion to the taste, but a passable complement.
O: It won't dazzle discerning drinkers familiar with the best of the best in the global arena, but by Polish standards it's rather good. Well worth trying, if pricey in its country of origin. I'd get it again, but it's not in the upper echelon of beers in this style.
Low B- (3.30) / WORTHY
