The latest limited release Modus is: Dreamweaver Unfiltered IPA. Gotta love Modus, they know what they love and that thing is brewing big IPAs and DIPAs with an onslaught of hops. Dreamweaver has a list of luminary hops, including: Amarillo, Centennial, Citra and Simcoe - if you added Chinook and Mosaic it would be a “who’s who” of the American IPA hop world. It would also be a bit too crazy methinks, so I like that Modus limited themselves to a rather ample but not insane hop bill. One thing I’m wondering is if Modus will actually go back to dark beers again this (Australian) winter - don’t get me wrong, I’m loving their big and hop-filled releases, however I’ll always have a soft spot for their Caribbean Queen, that beer was brill.
Poured from a 500ml can into a nonic pint.
A: Like about as cloudy AF of any beer I’ve ever seen - it’s totally opaque! Looks like a glass of extra cloudy pineapple juice with a billowy white head that descends quickly leaving a thin blanket of lace. Well it’s unfiltered alright! 10/10.
S: Grassy green hops with a tropical slant: green papaya, lychee and green mango. The aroma is not unlike a very fresh and raw hop tea concoction and the first thing that comes to mind as I sniff this is “too far hop car?”. A whiff of the other half still in the can comes across with a more spicy/piney character. Malt? Probably in the naughty corner somewhere - this is a hop’s show after all. 8/10.
T: Spicy and bitter front palate leads into a tropical haven of hop characters: green papaya, lychee, green mango, herbal/cannabis notes, touch of pineapple and a dry cracker malt that ends with a medium bitterness and an almost rubbery note in the finish. So it’s East meets West Coast, in a similar vein to Hop Nation Jedi Juice - however more on the West Coast assertive hops side. 8/10.
M: Mouthfeel is a bit over-carbed with a medium body, plenty of hop oils and a mid to high carbonation. Overly fizzy IPAs are a bit of a no-no in my book. 6/10.
D: Yet another top-notch American IPA to add to the list of many top-notch limited release IPAs Modus have brewed. They certainly have a knack for it, and it’s no secret what they do to make these beers so hype-worthy: they drop a f**k-ton of hops in their beers - it isn’t rocket science people! Where does it sit in the pantheon of Modus? I would rank it around about the same level as Future Factory, which was good but basically fruit juice, this is quite the opposite to that. 8/10.
Food match: It’s beginning to become a tired troupe for me but: green papaya salad.
