Big thanks to Chris and Kyoko for bringing this rare beer back from Japan.

Pours an opaque black/dark brown, very thick brown head forms, tons of lace on the glass, and settles to a thick layer, looks real good. Smell is neat, floral and citrus comes out, chocolate, lots of roast, smooth caramel malt, licorice, some cane sugar, more chocolate, nice. Taste is caramel, bread and biscuits, roast coffee grounds, chocolate, earthy, solid bitter finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation, very smooth. Real nice beer, a definite treat. Thanks Chris and Kyoko!

chris and kyoko brought this back from a recent trip to japan and were nice enough to share. thanks!

633ml bottle. 2008 vintage. sampled june 14/08.

pours nearly black with a small very fine light brown head. the head drops fairly fast and leaves spotty lace.

aroma is nice. bit of yeast. caramel. light toasted wheat bread. biscuit. bit of alcohol. slightly fruity. dark and milk chocolate. oatmeal. coffee.

taste is good. just under medium bitterness level. dark and bittersweet chocolate. biscuit. toasted wheat bread. light roast. caramel. bit of alcohol. oatmeal. bit of fruit too.

mouthfeel is great. medium-low carbonation level. just above medium body but still retaining a fairly dry finish.

drinkability is great. nicely balanced. great malt and chocolatey character. really enjoyed this one and wish it was available locally.

2008 Vintage, 633ml bomber brought back from Japan by two very good friends.

Although the beer appears black in most parts, it has actually far more colour to it; among the many tones included are bits of crimson and maroon as well as lovely highlighted chestnut edges. An earthy-clay pigmented colour for head. This is one nice looking beer.

The aroma does a fantastic job at easing you into both the style and character of the beer. The smell is something like a decadent hot chocolate, with notes of rich espresso, densely roasted malts, burnt chocolate and a small touch of dark berries.

Very bittersweet cocoa and scorched, sweet sugar stabilize one another to make for a harmoniously balanced mouthfeel. Tastes and textures dry, bitter and sweet are all in good proportion.

Flavours of cocoa, ovaltine, and bakers chocolate are first to show. Then hints of molasses and brown sugar. Bolder flavours of cold coffee along with both late and espresso are tasted. Seems more like a sweet stout at times...

The Japanese should make this their official, national drink of dessert. Good looks, a balance between bitter and sweet, and bold, tasty flavours means there is nothing not to enjoy about this one.

Baird Brewing's motto is "balance, character, complexity" and from first impression, I'd consider it is quite appropriate. Huge thanks Chris and Kyoko for this lovely treat!
